Hitting one is a scheduling problem — and it has a feature nobody warns you about: your visa decision window falls across Christmas and New Year, when universities close for a fortnight, visa centres run reduced hours, courier services slow and the people you need answers from are on leave.

September applicants have a forgiving summer to absorb delays. January applicants have the deadest three weeks in the British calendar sitting in the middle of their timeline. This guide works backwards from a January 2027 start and sets out what must happen in each month, where applications actually fail, and how to build the buffer that makes the difference.

Accept your offer and pay the deposit. Universities will not issue a CAS until conditions are met — typically an unconditional offer, English evidence and a deposit. Deposits also reduce the tuition element you must evidence for the visa.
Get the maintenance money into the right account and leave it alone. Funds must sit for 28 consecutive days, and the closing balance must be dated no more than 31 days before you submit. November 2026: CAS, TB test, and visa submission

December 2026: the danger month

Target late November for submission, and treat 5 December as your hard line. On standard three-week processing, an application submitted around 26 November should be decided before the holidays; anything submitted after the first week of December is realistically relying on priority service rather than standard timelines. If you are past that point, pay for priority rather than hoping.
Expect your university to close from roughly the third week of December into early January. Any question you need answered — a CAS correction, an accommodation confirmation, a deferral request — must be asked before that shutter comes down.
Book flights only once the visa is decided, and price winter disruption into the plan. January weather cancels flights.

Where January applications actually fail

Funds moved too late. The 28-day rule is arithmetic, not judgement — an application submitted 20 days after the money landed fails regardless of how much is there.
Waiting for Christmas answers. Universities close. A CAS error discovered on 22 December may not get a human response until 5 January, by which point the intake is gone.
Standard processing plus optimism. Three weeks is a target, not a promise, and the holiday period is exactly when targets slip.
Biometrics booked late. The clock does not start until that appointment — a fortnight's delay finding a slot is a fortnight added to everything.
Treating enrolment deadlines as negotiable. Under current compliance rules they are not, and universities have less discretion than they used to.
