Funding your degree
Forget scholarship spam — this is the honest 2026 list: university merit awards worth £2,000–£6,000, GREAT’s £10,000 awards, and the fully-funded national schemes with real odds explained.
National schemes
The UK government’s flagship award: full tuition, living stipend and flights for a one-year master’s. Extremely competitive — strong leadership evidence and at least two years’ work experience required. Applications typically open August–November for the following September.
British Council co-funded awards of £10,000 towards a one-year master’s, offered with specific universities for students from selected countries (including Pakistan, India, Nigeria and others in recent years). Apply directly through each participating university.
For students from Commonwealth countries with financial need who could not otherwise study in the UK — full tuition, stipend and flights. Focused on development-related courses; applications usually open in the autumn.
University awards
These are the awards most international students actually receive — automatic or light-touch applications, stacked on top of any early-payment discount. Amounts are the university’s published figures; see each profile for conditions.

HuddersfieldFAQ
Realistically: university merit scholarships (£2,000–£6,000 off tuition, often automatic or by early application), GREAT Scholarships (£10,000, selected universities), Chevening (fully funded, needs work experience) and Commonwealth awards. Most of our students combine a university award with careful budgeting rather than relying on fully-funded schemes.
Usually not. Fully-funded awards like Chevening exist but are highly competitive. Most awards are partial — £2,000–£10,000 off tuition. Plan your budget assuming a partial award, and treat a full scholarship as upside.
Early. Merit awards are often first-come-first-served against a fixed pot, and national schemes close months before the intake (Chevening closes around November for the next September). Applying by January–March for a September start keeps every option open.
It varies — many international merit awards are applied automatically when you accept your offer, others need a short scholarship form or essay. Each university profile on our site lists its main awards; we handle the scholarship paperwork with your application.
Fees, entry requirements, English-language policies and intake dates are correct to the best of our knowledge at the date shown, but universities review them every cycle and immigration rules change. Always treat figures as a guide — we confirm the exact, current requirements with the university before you apply.
