Our take

Is Sunderland right for you?

Sunderland is the university we recommend most often to students whose first filter is cost. International postgraduate fees start at £16,500 for 2026/27 — among the lowest in England — and the automatic Global Leaders Scholarship has recently taken a further £4,500 off first-year postgraduate fees for students from countries including Pakistan, India and Nigeria. The teaching has caught up with the price: Sunderland broke into the Guardian Top 30 in 2026, its highest position ever. Healthcare is the standout — it is one of only a handful of GPhC-accredited OSPAP providers for overseas pharmacists, and its nursing, pharmacy and public health courses fill quickly. Living costs in the North East are among the cheapest in the UK, the campus is minutes from the coast, and Newcastle is a short Metro ride away. Business students can choose the London campus in Canary Wharf instead, where the MBA and management master’s degrees usually run January as well as September starts.

Sunderland graduates returning for a full-time or part-time postgraduate course on the Sunderland campuses, including international students. Cannot be combined with the Global Leaders Scholarship.

English language

IELTS 6.0 overall (no band below 5.5) — typical requirement.

Sunderland can consider a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter in place of IELTS for some applicants. Sunderland considers a Medium of Instruction letter where your previous study was at RQF Level 5 or higher (roughly HND level and above). How recent that study must be varies by the country it was completed in, and regulated courses such as nursing and the OSPAP still require a formal English test — so we always confirm MOI eligibility with the university before you rely on it.

Also accepted: LanguageCert Academic, Oxford International Digital (ELLT), Pre-sessional English (EAP) at Sunderland. Pre-sessional English courses are available if you fall short.

January September

September is the main intake across both campuses. Many master’s courses — particularly business, management, computing and public health — also start in January, especially at the London campus. The OSPAP and most health professional courses are September-only.

Entry requirements

Applying to Sunderland from your country.

From Pakistan

Sunderland is consistently one of the most affordable options for Pakistani students, and the Global Leaders Scholarship has recently applied automatically to eligible Pakistani applicants. For master’s courses you typically need a bachelor’s degree equivalent to a UK 2:2 — usually a four-year degree such as a BS (Hons), or a two-year degree plus a master’s, assessed case by case. Note the deposit rule: applicants from Pakistan are currently asked to pay 50% of the first year’s fee before a CAS is issued, rather than the standard £3,500. MOI letters are considered for recent degrees, though we usually recommend a formal test such as IELTS or LanguageCert for a smoother visa file.

From India

Indian students most commonly join Sunderland’s business, computing, public health and nursing master’s courses. A three-year bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian university is usually acceptable for postgraduate entry, typically with around 55–60% depending on the awarding institution. Applicants from India currently pay 50% of the first year’s fee before the CAS stage instead of the standard £3,500 deposit. MOI letters are considered where your degree is recent and was taught in English, and the January intake gives useful flexibility if you miss September.

From Nigeria

Sunderland has a dedicated regional team for Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa. For undergraduate entry, WAEC or NECO with strong credit passes is typically considered alongside a foundation year; for master’s courses a bachelor’s degree at second class is usually expected. The standard £3,500 deposit applies before your CAS. English requirements can sometimes be met without IELTS — Sunderland considers MOI letters and accepts LanguageCert — but MOI validity varies by country, so confirm your specific position with us before you apply.

From the UAE

Students applying from the UAE usually hold A-Levels, IB or an Indian or Pakistani curriculum qualification from an international school, which Sunderland recognises for direct entry; the UAE secondary school certificate typically routes through a foundation year first. The standard £3,500 CAS deposit applies. One caution on budgeting: the Global Leaders Scholarship has excluded applicants from Gulf states in recent cycles, so ask us to confirm which discounts you actually qualify for before you plan your finances.

Healthcare professionals

Already qualified in healthcare? You may not need another degree.

OSPAP for overseas pharmacists

University of Sunderland is one of the few GPhC-accredited OSPAP providers. If you are already a qualified pharmacist, OSPAP — not a standard MSc — is the route to UK registration.

OSPAP guide

Qualified nurse already?

If you already hold a nursing qualification, NMC registration (CBT + OSCE) may be faster and cheaper than a second degree — and leads straight to UK employment.

Need an English test?

We prepare healthcare applicants for OET as an alternative to IELTS — accepted by the NMC, GMC and GPhC, and often the easier test for clinical professionals.

FAQ

University of Sunderland — common questions.

What is the University of Sunderland ranked in 2026?

Sunderland is ranked 27th in the Guardian University Guide 2026 — its first ever Top 30 finish — and around 75th in the Complete University Guide 2026. Its subject rankings are particularly strong in pharmacy, journalism, business and health sciences.

How much are international tuition fees at Sunderland for 2026/27?

Undergraduate international fees are £17,500 per year, while postgraduate taught fees range from £16,500 to £19,000 depending on the course. Your exact fee is confirmed in your offer letter, and eligible students can reduce it further through the Global Leaders Scholarship.

What deposit do I need to pay to get a CAS from Sunderland?

Most international students pay a non-refundable deposit of £3,500 before the university issues a CAS; it counts as the first part of your tuition and the balance can usually be paid in five instalments. Applicants from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal are currently asked to pay 50% of the first year’s fee before the CAS stage instead.

Does the University of Sunderland accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter?

Yes, in some cases. Sunderland considers MOI letters where your previous study was at RQF Level 5 or above, and how recently you must have studied varies by country. Regulated courses such as nursing and the OSPAP still need a formal test, so it is worth confirming your position before you apply — contact us and we will check for you.

Does Sunderland offer the OSPAP for overseas pharmacists?

Yes — Sunderland is one of only a few UK universities running a GPhC-accredited OSPAP (the PgDip Pharmaceutical Sciences), currently accredited through to 2027/28. It starts each September and typically fills early, so apply as soon as applications open. Our guide at /ospap-overseas-pharmacist-assessment-program/ explains the full route to GPhC registration.

Is there a January intake at the University of Sunderland?

Yes. September is the main intake, but many master’s courses — including business, management, computing and public health options — also start in January, particularly at the London campus. The OSPAP and most health professional courses run from September only.

What scholarships can international students get at Sunderland?

The Global Leaders Scholarship has recently offered an automatic £5,000 reduction on undergraduate and £4,500 on postgraduate first-year fees for students from eligible countries, shown directly on your offer letter. Sunderland graduates returning for a master’s can instead receive a 20% alumni loyalty discount. Eligible countries and amounts are reviewed each cycle, so check the current terms before you budget.

Is Sunderland a good city for international students?

It is one of the cheapest student cities in the UK — accommodation, transport and everyday costs sit well below London or Manchester, and the campus is close to the coast. The city is compact and friendly with an established international community, and Newcastle is around 20 minutes away by Metro.

Fees, entry requirements, English-language policies and intake dates are correct to the best of our knowledge at the date shown, but universities review them every cycle and immigration rules change. Always treat figures as a guide — we confirm the exact, current requirements with the university before you apply.
