Visitor Visa for PLAB 2 in 2026: Documents, Fees and Refusal Reasons

Every overseas doctor on the PLAB route has to enter the UK once before they are allowed to work there, because PLAB 2 is held only in Manchester. That single trip needs a Standard Visitor visa, and for applicants from Pakistan, India, Nigeria and Bangladesh it is where the process most often stalls — not because the exam is a doubtful purpose, but because a visitor visa is decided on money, ties and credibility, and a recently graduated doctor with a modest bank balance and no job can look, on paper, like someone who might not go home.

This guide sets out exactly which visa you need, what the rules let you do on it, the 2026 fees, the documents that make the difference, why applications are refused, and how the visa fits around the PLAB 2 booking and the two-year clock. It also covers clinical attachments, which the same visa permits and which most candidates should be using the trip for.

The short answer

  • Visa: Standard Visitor visa, six months, £135 for applications from 8 April 2026. No Immigration Health Surcharge, and no TB test for a stay of six months or less.
  • Permitted: sitting PLAB 2 (or the NMC OSCE), and an unpaid clinical attachment that involves no treatment of patients. Not permitted: any paid or unpaid work, or switching to a work visa from inside the UK.
  • Timing: apply up to three months before travel, after your PLAB 2 booking is confirmed. Standard processing is about three weeks from biometrics; priority is £500 extra.
  • The case you must make: a fixed, documented purpose, funds that are clearly yours or your sponsor's, and a credible reason to leave when the exam is over.

Which visa, and what it lets you do

PLAB 2 candidates apply as Standard Visitors. There is no separate "PLAB visa": the immigration rules list sitting the PLAB test and the OSCE as permitted activities for visitors, alongside unpaid clinical attachments and dental observer posts, under Appendix Visitor: Permitted Activities (paragraph PA 10.1). You should not apply for a Student visa, and you cannot yet apply for a Health and Care Worker visa, because that route needs GMC registration and a job offer you do not have.

On a Standard Visitor visa you canYou cannot
Sit PLAB 2 in ManchesterTake paid or unpaid employment of any kind
Undertake an unpaid clinical attachment or observership at an NHS trust, with no responsibility for treating patientsTreat patients, or hold a post that involves clinical responsibility
Attend a PLAB 2 preparation course or mock circuitsEnrol on a course of study beyond what the visitor rules allow
Stay for up to six months per visitExtend beyond six months, or switch to a Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa from inside the UK
Attend GMC identity checks and job interviewsStart work before you hold registration, a Certificate of Sponsorship and a work visa

The last row matters more than candidates expect. Passing PLAB 2 changes nothing about your immigration status. If you want to stay on for an attachment, you can, within the six months. If you want to work, you go home, complete registration, secure a job with a licensed sponsor and apply for the Health and Care Worker visa from there.

Long-term visitor visas (two, five and ten years) exist, but they cost more and buy nothing for a single exam trip, so apply for the six-month visa unless you have an independent reason to visit repeatedly.

Work backwards from the exam date. You need the decision — and the passport back — before you fly, and you need a PLAB 2 booking before you apply, because the booking confirmation is the evidence of purpose. A comfortable sequence is: PLAB 2 booked at least three to four months out; visa applied for as soon as the booking sits inside the three-month window; biometrics booked immediately; decision expected around three weeks later, leaving a month of margin. If the exam is within six weeks and you have not applied, pay for priority.

Remember what the PLAB 2 booking and cancellation rules do to a late visa: cancelling 28 days or fewer before the exam forfeits the whole £1,036. The GMC will consider a full refund if a visa refusal prevents attendance, but it is a discretion that needs evidence, not a right.

The documents that decide the application

The online form and biometrics are mechanical. The decision is made on the documents, and a PLAB 2 application is judged against the same "genuine visitor" test as any other: is the purpose genuine, can you fund the trip without working, and will you leave? Present evidence for each of the three, in a single well-ordered bundle.

Purpose

  • GMC PLAB 2 booking confirmation, showing the date and the Manchester venue
  • PLAB 1 result and your GMC Online reference
  • Confirmation letter from the NHS trust if you have arranged a clinical attachment, stating that it is unpaid and observational
  • A one-page cover letter explaining the exam, the dates, where you will stay, who is paying, and your plan to return home to complete GMC registration

Funds

  • Six months of bank statements in your name, or your sponsor's, on official letterhead or as verified e-statements
  • If a parent or spouse is funding you: a sponsorship letter, their statements, proof of income and evidence of the relationship
  • An explanation for any large recent deposit — lump sums that appear a week before the application are the single most common reason funds are judged not credible
  • A realistic budget: exam fee already paid, flights, accommodation for the whole stay, and living costs

Ties and intention to return

  • Employment letter confirming your post, salary and approved leave dates; house-officer and medical-officer contracts count
  • If you are not working: evidence of your registration plans, an upcoming post, or ongoing training at home
  • Family circumstances — marriage certificate, children's birth certificates, dependants you support
  • Property or business documents, where they exist
  • Previous travel history, including old passports

Applicants from Pakistan attend biometrics at the visa application centres in Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi. The general requirements and process are covered in our UK visit visa from Pakistan guide; this article is the PLAB-specific layer on top of it. Our document preparation service assembles and checks the bundle before submission.

Why PLAB 2 visa applications are refused

Visitor refusals for exam candidates cluster around a handful of reasons, and most are avoidable:

  1. Funds not credible. A balance that appeared recently, statements with no salary pattern, or a sponsor whose own income cannot support the amount shown. The caseworker is assessing whether the money is genuinely available to you, not just whether the number is big enough.
  2. Weak ties. A recently graduated, unmarried, unemployed doctor with no property is exactly the profile caseworkers worry will not return. The answer is not to invent ties but to document the ones you have, and to explain the logic: you cannot work in the UK until you have GMC registration, and registration is completed from home.
  3. Inconsistencies. Dates on the form that do not match the booking, a stated stay of six months for a one-day exam with no explanation, an employer letter contradicting the statements. Every document is read against every other.
  4. Vague purpose. Applications that say "tourism" or "personal" rather than naming the exam, or that omit the GMC booking entirely.
  5. Undeclared history. A previous refusal from any country that is not disclosed is treated as deception and carries consequences well beyond this application.

A long stay is not itself a problem — plenty of candidates arrive a month early for academy courses and stay on for an attachment — but it must be explained and funded for its full length.

If you are refused

There is no right of appeal against a visitor visa refusal. You can apply again, and the refusal letter tells you exactly which parts of the genuine-visitor test you did not meet. Address each point with new evidence rather than resubmitting the same bundle: a refusal for funds needs different financial documents, not a longer cover letter. Notify the GMC immediately about your booking, with the refusal letter, and move the exam date rather than losing the fee. Then re-apply with enough time to get a decision before the new date.

Using the trip well: clinical attachments

The visitor rules allow overseas medical graduates to undertake an unpaid clinical attachment involving no treatment of patients, and it is the most valuable thing you can add to a PLAB 2 trip. Two to four weeks shadowing a team at an NHS trust gives you a UK consultant referee, NHS familiarity that shows in interviews, and material for the supporting-information section of job applications that shortlisting panels now weigh heavily. Arrange it before you travel — trusts need a written request, proof of your medical qualification and an honorary contract or attachment agreement — and put the confirmation letter in your visa bundle.

Since the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026, most IMGs start in non-training posts and compete on UK experience, so an attachment is no longer a nice-to-have. Our guides on the Act and what it means for IMGs and on getting shortlisted from overseas explain the job market you are preparing for.

Budgeting the whole trip

The visa is the cheapest line. The full cost of the Manchester trip — exam fee, visa, flights, accommodation and any course — usually lands between £2,000 and £3,500 for a South Asian candidate on a first attempt, and our PLAB cost breakdown sets every item out. Show the caseworker that you know this: a budget in the cover letter that matches the funds in the statements is itself evidence of a genuine, planned visit.

Frequently asked questions

Which visa do I need for PLAB 2?

A Standard Visitor visa. Sitting PLAB is an expressly permitted visitor activity, along with unpaid clinical attachments. You cannot use a Student visa, and the Health and Care Worker visa comes later, after registration and a job offer.

How much does the visitor visa cost in 2026?

£135 for the six-month visa for applications from 8 April 2026. Priority processing adds £500 and super priority £1,000. There is no Immigration Health Surcharge and no TB test for a stay of six months or less.

When should I apply?

As soon as your PLAB 2 booking is confirmed and your travel date is within three months. Allow about three weeks from biometrics for a standard decision plus a buffer, and pay for priority if the exam is within six weeks.

Can I stay and work in the UK after passing PLAB 2?

No. A visitor cannot work and cannot switch to a work visa inside the UK. You return home, complete GMC registration, obtain a job offer and Certificate of Sponsorship, and apply for the Health and Care Worker visa from your home country.

Can I do a clinical attachment on the same visa?

Yes, provided it is unpaid, you do not treat patients, and it fits within your six-month stay. Get a confirmation letter from the trust and include it in your application.

What if my visa is refused?

There is no appeal, but you can reapply. Address each reason in the refusal letter with new evidence, tell the GMC straight away so your booking can be moved, and re-apply with time for a decision before the new date.

A PLAB 2 visa application is not difficult, but it is unforgiving of gaps: money without a story, a purpose without a booking, or a stay without a return plan.
