GDC Registration Requirements from India 2026: BDS to UK Dental Practice

user 17 May 2026 GDC registration India, GDC registration requirements, Indian dentist UK registration

India consistently sits at the top of overseas-dentist applications to the UK General Dental Council. A combination of strong English-language clinical training, high BDS programme volume and reliable UK demand for dentists makes the route well-trodden — but it is also tightly regulated and the documentation requirements are unforgiving. This 2026 guide covers every step Indian BDS graduates need to plan for, from Dental Council of India (DCI) verification through to the Health and Care Worker Visa.

Are Indian BDS qualifications recognised by the UK GDC?

Yes — Indian BDS graduates are eligible to register with the GDC, subject to passing the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE). The GDC's Overseas Qualification Recognition team reviews your BDS to confirm it meets the required academic standard. Typically:

  • BDS (4 years + 1-year compulsory rotating internship) from a Dental Council of India recognised university is accepted as the qualifying degree for ORE eligibility.
  • BDS programmes shorter than 4,600 hours of study are reviewed more closely. Most modern Indian BDS programmes are well above this threshold.
  • MDS (postgraduate specialist qualification) does not replace the ORE — you still need to sit Part 1 and Part 2. However, MDS holders typically perform well on the ORE because of their additional clinical exposure.

If your BDS was awarded by a deemed-to-be-university or a state university with non-standard programme structure, expect the GDC to request additional information. Apply early.

Documents required from Indian dentists

India-specific documents to gather before you start the GDC eligibility application:

  • Dental Council of India (DCI) registration certificate — current and active. The GDC verifies your DCI registration directly with the DCI.
  • State Dental Council registration certificate — most Indian dentists are registered with both the DCI and the state council where they trained or practise (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Kerala, Punjab, etc.).
  • DCI Good Standing certificate — issued by the DCI at federal level, dated within 3 months of your GDC application. Take care: Good Standing certificates have a short validity window.
  • BDS degree certificate — original-equivalent attested copy, often required to be apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • Detailed academic transcript — issued by your university, showing marks and clinical hours per subject and per year. Standard mark sheets are not enough — the GDC asks for the full transcript with hours.
  • Internship completion certificate — confirming completion of the 1-year compulsory rotatory internship after BDS final year.
  • Course curriculum / syllabus document — sometimes requested by the GDC if your university is less commonly seen.
  • Valid Indian passport — minimum 12 months validity.
  • Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) — from your local Passport Seva Kendra. Required at registration stage; allow 2–4 weeks.
  • Two professional references — from registered dentists who have known you for at least 3 years.

Where Indian applications most often slow down: DCI Good Standing letters and state council verification. Some state councils respond to GDC verification requests within 3–4 weeks; others take 8–12 weeks. Begin both processes the day you start your GDC application.

English language requirements for Indian dentists

The GDC requires evidence of English at IELTS Academic 7.0 (with no individual band below 6.5) or OET Dentistry Grade B (350+) in Listening, Reading and Speaking, and Grade C+ (300+) in Writing.

Indian dentists have three routes to satisfy this requirement:

1. OET Dentistry (recommended)

  • Specifically designed for dental practice — case notes, dental consultations, dental Speaking role-plays.
  • The same OET result satisfies the UK Skilled Worker visa English language requirement (CEFR B2) — no separate visa English test needed.
  • Available across India — Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Cochin.
  • See our OET Dentistry guide for full details.

2. IELTS Academic (UKVI)

  • 7.0 overall with no band below 6.5.
  • General academic content rather than dental — less direct preparation overlap with your ORE work.
  • Available across all major Indian cities.

3. Medium of Instruction (MOI) evidence

The GDC accepts MOI evidence in limited circumstances — typically a robust MOI letter from your university plus evidence of recent dental practice in English. The bar is high; most Indian dentists default to OET or IELTS for certainty.

ORE — the two-part overseas registration exam

The ORE is the largest hurdle in the Indian dentist's GDC pathway. Both parts must be taken in the UK.

ORE Part 1 — Written

  • Paper A — clinical sciences: 200 best-of-five questions, 3 hours.
  • Paper B — clinical dentistry: 100 extended matching questions, 3 hours.
  • Fee: £806 per attempt.
  • Held at King's College London Guy's campus and a small number of other UK venues.
  • First-attempt pass rate: ~45–60% (Paper A), ~55–65% (Paper B). See our ORE pass rate guide for the full breakdown.

ORE Part 2 — Clinical

  • OSCE: 12–18 stations testing history-taking, consent, communication, diagnostics.
  • Dental Manikin Tasks (DMT): hands-on cavity preparations, crown preparations, endodontic access cavities, suturing — on a dental simulator.
  • Treatment Planning & Diagnostics (TPD): written and viva component, case-based.
  • Medical Emergencies (ME): simulated cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, hypoglycaemia, syncope, asthma.
  • Fee: £2,929 per attempt.
  • Held at the Royal College of Surgeons of England Dental Skills and Innovation Centre, London.
  • First-attempt pass rate: ~50–65% overall. DMT is the lowest component.

You must pass Part 1 before booking Part 2. Each part allows a maximum of 4 attempts.

Total cost from India

Cost itemApproximate amount
GDC eligibility application£900
ORE Part 1 (per attempt)£806
ORE Part 2 (per attempt)£2,929
GDC final registration fee£886
GDC annual retention fee (first year)£730
OET Dentistry (or IELTS Academic)£300–£400
Document verification, apostille, attestation£100–£250
UK Standard Visitor Visa (Part 1 and Part 2 trips)£127 + £127
Flights and UK accommodation for ORE (combined)£2,000–£4,000
UK manikin preparation course (recommended)£1,500–£3,500
Health and Care Worker Visa£324 (up to 3 years)
Total estimated outlay£10,000–£14,500

This is a meaningful financial commitment. Many Indian dentists fund the route through a combination of personal savings, NHS sponsor support after passing Part 1 (where employers reimburse certain costs), and family support. Plan the cash flow carefully.

Realistic timeline from India

StageTypical duration
Document gathering, DCI Good Standing, state council verification2–4 months
English test (OET Dentistry preparation and result)3–4 months
GDC eligibility decision8–12 weeks
ORE Part 1 preparation and pass3–6 months
Wait for ORE Part 2 slot (popular slots queue 6–12 months)6–12 months
ORE Part 2 preparation (parallel with wait)3–4 months
UK Standard Visitor Visa for ORE trips3–6 weeks each
Final GDC registration after Part 24–8 weeks
Securing UK job offer and Health and Care Worker Visa2–4 months
Total18–30 months

The two largest variables are state council verification time and ORE Part 2 slot availability. Indian dentists who plan both in parallel typically complete the route 4–8 months faster than those who plan sequentially.

Health and Care Worker Visa for Indian dentists

Once you hold a GDC registration number and a UK job offer from a licensed sponsor, you apply for the Health and Care Worker Visa. Key facts for Indian dentists in 2026:

  • Application fee — £324 for visas up to 3 years (after the April 2026 fee rise).
  • Immigration Health Surcharge — exempt. A material saving versus the standard Skilled Worker route.
  • Salary threshold — aligned with NHS dental band minima; most associate dentist offers comfortably exceed the route minimum.
  • 5-year route to ILR retained for Health and Care Worker visa holders under the 2025 white paper, while the standard ILR route extends to 10 years (see our 10-year ILR rule guide).
  • CEFR B2 English required at the visa stage from 8 January 2026 — see our CEFR B2 visa English guide. OET Dentistry Grade B already exceeds this.

Bringing family to the UK from India

The Health and Care Worker Visa is one of the most family-friendly UK routes:

  • Spouse and children under 18 can come as dependants on the same route.
  • Dependants are IHS-exempt — material savings versus the standard Skilled Worker dependant visa.
  • Dependants can work in any sector — your spouse is not restricted to dentistry or healthcare.
  • Children can attend UK state schools free of charge.
  • Adult dependants now need CEFR B2 English from January 2026 — plan early for this.

Parents and adult children who are not coming as dependants will need a UK Standard Visitor Visa (up to 6 months per visit).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Indian BDS graduates register with the UK GDC?

Yes. Indian BDS graduates from Dental Council of India recognised universities are eligible to register with the GDC after passing the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE) and meeting English language requirements.

Do I need MDS to register with the GDC?

No. BDS plus the 1-year compulsory rotating internship is the qualifying degree for ORE eligibility. MDS is not required, although MDS holders often perform well on the ORE because of additional clinical exposure.

What is the total cost of GDC registration from India?

Allow approximately £10,000–£14,500 from start to first-year UK registration, including GDC fees, ORE Part 1 and Part 2 (one attempt each), English test, document verification, ORE travel and UK accommodation, manikin preparation and Health and Care Worker Visa. Resits add £806 (Part 1) or £2,929 (Part 2) each.

How long does GDC registration from India take?

Typically 18–30 months from initial document gathering to receiving your GDC number. The biggest variables are state council verification time and ORE Part 2 slot availability — both can be reduced by planning in parallel.

Can my spouse work in the UK on my Health and Care Worker Visa?

Yes. Spouses on the Health and Care Worker dependant visa can work full-time in any sector, including non-healthcare roles. They are not restricted to your sponsor or to dentistry.

Is OET Dentistry better than IELTS for Indian dentists?

For most Indian dentists OET Dentistry is the more direct route — its content is dental practice case notes and consultations, matching your daily clinical work. The same OET result also satisfies the UK Skilled Worker visa English requirement (CEFR B2). See our OET vs IELTS guide.

What happens if I fail ORE Part 1 or Part 2?

The GDC allows up to 4 attempts at each part. After 4 unsuccessful attempts, you cannot continue on the ORE pathway and must consider the Licentiate in Dental Surgery (LDS) or complete a UK BDS degree. We strongly recommend high-quality preparation before each attempt.
