How to Apply for OSPAP in 2026: Step-by-Step Guide

user 25 March 2025 How to apply for ospap, Ospap

Applying for OSPAP involves more steps than most international pharmacists expect. The process spans several months and requires coordination between the GPhC, your chosen university, and the Home Office. This guide walks you through every step of the OSPAP 2026 application in the correct order.

Who Needs to Apply for OSPAP?

You need OSPAP if you qualified as a pharmacist outside the UK, EEA, or Switzerland and want to register with the GPhC. Without completing OSPAP, you cannot sit the GPhC Registration Assessment. See our full guide on OSPAP eligibility requirements.

Step 1: Apply for Your GPhC Eligibility Check

Before applying to any university, you must obtain a GPhC eligibility letter. This takes 8–16 weeks — start here first.

Documents required:

  • Certified copy of your pharmacy degree certificate
  • Official academic transcripts (translated into English if required)
  • UK ENIC statement of comparability
  • Evidence of pharmacist registration in your home country
  • Valid passport (ID pages)
  • IELTS or OET result (see Step 2)
  • Completed GPhC application form and adjudication fee payment

Step 2: Pass Your English Language Test

The GPhC accepts two tests:

  • IELTS Academic — minimum 7.0 in all four components. No single component can fall below 7.0.
  • OET for Pharmacy — minimum Grade B in all four sub-tests.

PTE Academic is not accepted. Your result must be no more than two years old. We offer specialist OET preparation for pharmacists.

Step 3: Choose Your OSPAP University

Five GPhC-accredited universities offer OSPAP in 2026. Compare before applying.

Step 4: Submit Your University Application

OSPAP applications go directly to each university — not through UCAS. You can apply to multiple universities simultaneously. A standard application requires your GPhC eligibility letter, IELTS/OET certificate, personal statement, two references, certified degree copies, and a CV. Most universities open applications January–March for September 2026 intake. Apply early — places are limited.

Step 5: Apply for Your UK Student Visa

Once you receive a CAS letter from your university, apply for a UK Student visa (up to 6 months before your course starts). You must show proof of funds: £1,334/month in London or £1,023/month elsewhere, held for 28 consecutive days. The Immigration Health Surcharge is currently £776 per year. While you study in the UK, your parents and family in Pakistan can visit you. See our full guide on how to apply for a UK visit visa from Pakistan — including documents, fees, and the application process.

Step 6: Complete the OSPAP Course

OSPAP is a one-year full-time postgraduate diploma covering UK pharmacy law, clinical pharmacy practice, medicines management, and patient safety. Assessment combines written exams, clinical skills assessments, and a portfolio. Most courses run September to August.

Step 7: Secure Your Foundation Training Year Placement

After completing OSPAP, you must complete a 52-week foundation training year in a GPhC-approved setting. (The GPhC updated this terminology in 2026 — previously called "pre-registration training".) Apply via the Oriel portal; NHS applications typically open October–November. Apply early — places are competitive.

Step 8: Pass the GPhC Registration Assessment

The assessment is held twice a year (typically June and September). It has two papers: calculations and clinical. You must pass both, with up to three attempts allowed. On passing, you apply to join the GPhC register.
