Our take

Is Herts right for you?

The University of Hertfordshire is one of the most popular choices we handle for students who want London access without London costs. The campus is in Hatfield, around 25 minutes by train from King's Cross, yet accommodation and day-to-day living are noticeably cheaper than in the capital. It is a large, practically minded university — over 30,000 students, with a very substantial international community from South Asia, Africa and the Middle East — so new arrivals rarely feel isolated. For our healthcare applicants it is a genuinely strong option: pre-registration nursing at bachelor's and master's level, an established Master of Public Health, an MPharm school and a GPhC-accredited OSPAP programme for overseas pharmacists. Entry requirements are realistic rather than punishing, a January intake covers many business and computing masters, and automatic scholarships of £2,000–£3,500 make the fees among the more manageable in the London commuter belt. A sensible, well-rounded choice for career-focused applicants.

English language

IELTS 6.0 overall (no band below 5.5) — typical requirement.

Herts can consider a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter in place of IELTS for some applicants. Herts does consider Medium of Instruction evidence, but selectively. Its on-campus pathway college (HIC) formally accepts MOI letters from a list of recognised Indian universities for Pre-Master's entry, and the university currently considers English-medium degrees from recognised institutions for many direct-entry masters — mainly for Indian applicants, with some regions excluded. Nigerian applicants are typically assessed on WAEC/NECO English (usually C6 or better) instead. Pakistani applicants should normally plan for IELTS or an accepted alternative. We confirm the current MOI position for your profile before you apply.

Also accepted: PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, LanguageCert Academic, India Standard XII English (typically 65–75% depending on level), WAEC/NECO English, typically C6 or better (Nigeria). Pre-sessional English courses are available if you fall short.

When you can start.

September January

September is the main intake across all schools; a good number of business, computing and engineering masters also run in January. OSPAP and pre-registration health courses are September only. Hertfordshire International College (the on-campus pathway provider) offers additional start dates through the year. Note that most postgraduate courses ask for IELTS 6.0–6.5, and health courses usually require 6.5.

Entry requirements

Applying to Herts from your country.

From Pakistan

For undergraduate entry, HSSC with typically 60%+ is expected for direct year-1 entry on most courses (some ask more, and a foundation year via HIC covers lower profiles). For masters, a recognised bachelor's degree with around 55% or CGPA 2.5/4.0 is the usual benchmark; two-year degrees generally need a further qualification. Herts has a regional office presence in Pakistan and works with approved counsellors, so offers tend to move quickly. Plan for IELTS UKVI or an accepted alternative — MOI letters from Pakistani universities are not usually sufficient on their own.

From India

Standard XII at around 60–70% is the typical undergraduate benchmark depending on the course. Three-year bachelor's degrees are accepted for masters entry, usually at 55–65%. English is more flexible than at many universities: a strong Standard XII English score (typically 65–75%) can satisfy the requirement, and MOI from recognised English-medium universities is currently considered for many masters, with some regional exclusions. HIC also formally accepts MOI from a published list of Indian universities for Pre-Master's entry.

From Nigeria

WAEC/NECO with good credits supports foundation or undergraduate entry, and a bachelor's degree at second-class level is the usual masters benchmark. WAEC/NECO English at typically C6 or better is usually accepted in place of IELTS, which keeps costs down. Hertfordshire has a large, well-established Nigerian community, and the Master of Public Health is consistently one of the most popular choices — worth applying early, as September places fill fast.

From the UAE

Applicants from UAE schools are assessed on their curriculum: A-levels, IB, Indian Standard XII and Pakistani HSSC are all accepted for direct entry at the usual grades, while Tawjihiyya holders (typically 70%+) usually join via a foundation year. Degrees from recognised UAE universities are accepted for masters entry. The university has local representatives in the UAE, and September and January intakes both work well for Gulf-based applicants.

Healthcare professionals

Already qualified in healthcare? You may not need another degree.

OSPAP for overseas pharmacists

University of Hertfordshire is one of the few GPhC-accredited OSPAP providers. If you are already a qualified pharmacist, OSPAP — not a standard MSc — is the route to UK registration.

Qualified nurse already?

If you already hold a nursing qualification, NMC registration (CBT + OSCE) may be faster and cheaper than a second degree — and leads straight to UK employment.

FAQ

University of Hertfordshire — common questions.

What is the University of Hertfordshire ranked?

For 2026, Hertfordshire is ranked 48th in the Guardian University Guide and 82nd in the Complete University Guide — a solid mid-table modern university that has been rising in the UK tables. Globally it sits in the 901–950 band of the QS World University Rankings 2026. Its practical strengths — health, computing, engineering and business — matter more to most employers than the headline number.

How much are University of Hertfordshire fees for international students in 2026?

For 2026/27, the standard international undergraduate fee is £17,450 per year, and most taught masters cost between £17,950 and £22,450. Usefully, Herts charges one flat fee whether your course is classroom or lab-based. The OSPAP PgDip is priced lower, at around £14,250.

How much deposit do I need to pay for a CAS at Hertfordshire?

You need to pay a minimum non-refundable deposit of £5,000 before the university releases your CAS for the student visa application; a few courses ask for more. Paying it by the published deadline also triggers the automatic Early Bird scholarship — £3,500 off for postgraduates or £2,000 per year for undergraduates starting in September 2026.

Does the University of Hertfordshire accept MOI instead of IELTS?

Partially — and this is where good advice matters. MOI from recognised English-medium universities is currently considered for many masters courses, mainly for Indian applicants, and the on-campus pathway college publishes a formal MOI list for Indian institutions. Nigerian applicants are usually assessed on WAEC/NECO English instead, while Pakistani applicants should generally plan for IELTS (typically 6.0 overall, 5.5 per band; health courses 6.5) or an accepted alternative such as PTE Academic. We check the current policy against your exact profile before you apply — get in touch via /contact/.

Does the University of Hertfordshire have a January intake?

Yes. September is the main intake, but a good selection of business, computing and engineering masters also start in January, which suits students who miss the autumn deadline. Health courses such as nursing and OSPAP are September only, so those applicants should start their paperwork early in the year.

What scholarships can international students get at Hertfordshire?

Most of our applicants receive something automatically. The Chancellor's International Scholarship awards £500–£4,000 based on your academic profile, and the Early Bird scheme gives postgraduates a one-off £3,500 (or undergraduates £2,000 per year) for paying the deposit by the deadline for September 2026 entry. A further discount of typically £1,000 applies if you pay the full year's fee at registration.

Is the University of Hertfordshire good for nursing and pharmacy?

Yes — it is one of the stronger post-92 universities for healthcare. Nursing runs at BSc and two-year pre-registration MSc level, both leading to NMC registration, with placements across Hertfordshire and London NHS trusts. For pharmacists, Herts offers the MPharm and is one of only a few GPhC-accredited OSPAP providers in the UK, which is the required route for overseas pharmacists heading towards UK registration — see /ospap-overseas-pharmacist-assessment-program/ for how that pathway works.

What is Hatfield like for international students?

Hatfield is a small, safe town whose life revolves around the university — and its big advantage is location. Fast trains reach London King's Cross in roughly 25 minutes, so you get London internships, part-time work options and weekends in the capital while paying commuter-town rent. On-campus and private accommodation is plentiful, and the international community is one of the largest in the UK, so food, societies and support networks from South Asia, Africa and the Middle East are easy to find.

Fees, entry requirements, English-language policies and intake dates are correct to the best of our knowledge at the date shown, but universities review them every cycle and immigration rules change. Always treat figures as a guide — we confirm the exact, current requirements with the university before you apply.
