Indian Nurse UK Registration 2026: Complete NMC, OSCE and Health & Care Visa Guide
Indian nurses are the single largest group of internationally qualified nurses on the UK NMC register. NMC published data shows more than one in three new overseas joiners in 2025/26 trained in India — well ahead of the Philippines and Nigeria. UK NHS trusts and private healthcare providers actively recruit from India through ethical recruitment partnerships, and Indian-trained nurses have a strong track record at OSCE. This guide explains exactly how the NMC registration process works for nurses trained in India, with attention to the documents, verification steps and timelines that most often delay Indian applicants in 2026.
Are Indian nursing qualifications recognised by the UK NMC?
Yes — but the NMC assesses every application individually, and the level of your Indian qualification matters.
- BSc Nursing (4 years) — the strongest Indian qualification for NMC eligibility. Typically passes the theoretical and clinical hours test (NMC requires at least 500 hours each).
- Post Basic BSc Nursing (PB BSc, 2 years after GNM) — the combined GNM + PB BSc route is generally accepted as equivalent to first-level registration, provided clinical hours are documented.
- GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery, 3.5 years including internship) — a more difficult route. Pure GNM qualifications without further upgrade are increasingly being assessed as below the NMC's first-level registered nurse benchmark. NMC may ask for additional clinical evidence or a top-up qualification.
- ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife, 2 years) — not equivalent to NMC first-level registered nurse status. Not eligible without significant further training.
If you trained on a GNM-only route, request a detailed transcript breaking down theory and supervised clinical hours per subject. Indian transcripts that simply state "passed" without hours are a common reason for NMC delay or refusal.
Documents required from Indian nurses
India-specific documents for your NMC eligibility application:
- State Nursing Council registration certificate — current and active. The NMC verifies your registration with the State Nursing Council where you are registered (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi, etc.).
- Indian Nursing Council (INC) Good Standing letter — issued by the INC at the federal level. Required even though you registered at state level.
- Official transcript of marks — issued by your university (not your nursing school), showing every subject, marks, and clinical hours by year. Sealed and stamped.
- Course completion certificate / Diploma / Degree certificate — original-equivalent attested copy.
- Internship completion certificate — for GNM and BSc graduates, with hours per clinical area (Medical, Surgical, OBG, Paediatrics, Community).
- Aadhaar card and PAN card — for identity (in addition to passport).
- Valid Indian passport — minimum 12 months validity.
- Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) — issued by your local Passport Seva Kendra. Requested at the post-CBT stage; lead time 2–4 weeks.
- Declaration of Good Character and Health.
Where Indian applications most often slow down: State Nursing Council verification. Some states (Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu) respond to NMC verification requests within 4–6 weeks; others (notably some North Indian state councils) can take 12–16 weeks. Submit your verification request the day you start your NMC application — do not wait for the NMC to chase it.
English language requirements for Indian nurses
The NMC requires evidence of English at IELTS Academic 7.0 / OET Grade B level for nurses. Indian applicants have three routes to evidence:
1. OET Nursing (recommended for clinical nurses)
- Listening, Reading and Speaking — Grade B minimum (350+)
- Writing — Grade C+ minimum (300+)
- OET test centres in India: Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Cochin
- OET also satisfies the visa stage CEFR B2 requirement (see our CEFR B2 visa English guide).
2. IELTS Academic (UKVI)
- 7.0 overall, with reading, listening and speaking at 7.0 and writing at 6.5
- Available in all major Indian cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Kochi, Trivandrum.
3. Medium of Instruction (MOI) evidence
The NMC accepts MOI evidence from Indian nursing programmes taught and assessed in English, where the qualification is at the appropriate academic level. To use MOI you typically need:
- A signed MOI letter from your university confirming the language of instruction and assessment was English throughout your nursing programme.
- Two years of recent practice in an English-speaking environment, evidenced by a clinical employer letter.
MOI is increasingly accepted from Indian universities for BSc Nursing, but the evidence bar is high. Many Indian applicants who attempt the MOI route are asked for additional documentation and ultimately have to sit OET or IELTS anyway. If you are unsure, plan for OET as your primary path.
For a deeper comparison see our OET vs IELTS guide.
NMC CBT — available across India
The NMC Test of Competence Part 1 (CBT) is delivered at Pearson VUE test centres throughout India. Major CBT centres:
- Delhi NCR — multiple Pearson VUE centres
- Mumbai — multiple Pearson VUE centres
- Bangalore — Pearson VUE
- Chennai — Pearson VUE
- Hyderabad — Pearson VUE
- Kolkata — Pearson VUE
- Pune — Pearson VUE
- Cochin (Kerala) — Pearson VUE
- Chandigarh — Pearson VUE
The CBT fee is £83 per attempt. Indian nurses generally perform well on the multiple-choice format — pass rates are above the global overseas-applicant average. Book your slot the moment you receive your NMC eligibility decision letter, especially if you live in the South — Bangalore and Chennai centres fill quickly during peak recruitment seasons (April–June and September–November).
For the most up-to-date OSCE preparation guidance see our 2026 NMC OSCE preparation guide.
OSCE — taken in the UK
The Test of Competence Part 2 (OSCE) is the practical exam, taken at one of the four remaining NMC-approved centres. Note that Northumbria University closed its OSCE centre on 19 February 2026 — see our Northumbria OSCE closure guide for the current centre options.
Current OSCE centres for Indian applicants:
- Ulster University, Derry
- Oxford Brookes University
- University of Northampton
- Leeds Beckett University
The OSCE fee is £794 per attempt (maximum 4 attempts under the 2026 rules). Indian nurses should pay particular attention to:
- New February 2026 stations — Deteriorating Patient (using NEWS2 + SBAR), Anti-Embolism Stockings, Pre-Operative Checklist, and the silent Patient Private Details station.
- UK drug names — Indian clinical training often uses brand names; the OSCE expects generic / INN names (e.g. paracetamol not Crocin, salbutamol not Asthalin).
- NMC Code language — examiners listen for explicit reference to the four pillars: prioritise people, practise effectively, preserve safety, promote professionalism and trust.
- Verbalising every step — the assessor marks what is said, not what is silently performed. Indian nursing practice often involves quieter execution; UK OSCE rewards narration.
UK Standard Visitor Visa for OSCE travel
Indian nationals require a UK Standard Visitor Visa to travel for the OSCE. Apply through VFS Global at the UK Visas and Immigration application centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Cochin, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jalandhar or Goa. Standard processing is 3 weeks; priority and super priority services are available. Bring your CBT pass letter, OSCE booking confirmation, return flight booking, UK accommodation details and 6 months of bank statements.
Health and Care Worker Visa for Indian nurses
Once you have your NMC PIN and a UK job offer from a licensed sponsor, apply for the Health and Care Worker Visa. Key facts for Indian nurses in 2026:
- Application fee — £324 for visas up to 3 years, £628 for longer (after the April 2026 fee rise).
- Immigration Health Surcharge — exempt. A major saving versus the standard Skilled Worker route.
- Salary threshold — currently aligned with NHS Band 5 minimum (£29,969 in 2026), well above the route minimum.
- 5-year route to ILR retained for Health and Care Worker visa holders under the 2025 white paper, while the standard ILR route extends to 10 years (see our 10-year ILR rule guide).
- CEFR B2 English required at the visa stage from 8 January 2026 — see our CEFR B2 visa English guide. NMC-required OET Grade B already exceeds this.
Bringing family to the UK from India
The Health and Care Worker Visa is one of the most family-friendly routes in UK immigration:
- Spouse and children under 18 can come as dependants on the same route.
- Dependants are IHS-exempt — significant savings versus a Skilled Worker dependant visa.
- Dependants can work in any sector — your spouse is not restricted to healthcare.
- Children can attend UK state schools free of charge.
- Adult dependants now need CEFR B2 English from January 2026 — plan for this in test bookings.
Parents and adult children who are not coming as dependants will need a UK Standard Visitor Visa (up to 6 months per visit). For a deeper guide see our UK visit visa guide — much of the documentation logic is identical for Indian sponsors.
Realistic timeline from India
| Stage | Typical duration (Indian applicants) |
|---|---|
| Document gathering and English test | 2–4 months |
| NMC eligibility decision | 2–4 months (longer if state council slow to verify) |
| CBT booking and pass | 1–3 months |
| Securing UK job offer + Certificate of Sponsorship | 1–4 months |
| Standard Visitor Visa for OSCE travel | 3–6 weeks |
| OSCE slot and pass | 2–4 months |
| Health and Care Worker Visa decision | 3–8 weeks |
| Total | 12–18 months |
The two largest variables are state council verification time and OSCE slot availability. Indian nurses who plan both in parallel — rather than sequentially — typically complete the route 3–4 months faster.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Indian BSc Nursing graduates eligible for NMC registration?
Yes. A 4-year BSc Nursing degree from a recognised Indian university (with State Nursing Council registration and INC Good Standing) is normally accepted by the NMC, provided documented theory and clinical hours meet the NMC's 500-hour minimum in each.
Can GNM nurses register with the NMC in 2026?
It is possible but increasingly difficult. NMC scrutiny of GNM-only qualifications has tightened. Many GNM nurses are advised to complete Post Basic BSc Nursing before applying. If you apply on GNM alone, expect a request for detailed clinical hours evidence and a higher chance of refusal.
Does the NMC accept the Medium of Instruction route from Indian universities?
Yes for some BSc Nursing programmes, with a robust MOI letter and 2 years of recent English-language clinical practice. The bar is high and many MOI applications are converted into OET or IELTS requirements during assessment. OET Grade B remains the most reliable evidence path.
How long does State Nursing Council verification take?
4–6 weeks in well-resourced states such as Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. 12–16 weeks is not unusual elsewhere. Apply for verification on the same day you start your NMC application — do not wait for the NMC to request it.
Where can Indian nurses sit the NMC CBT?
At Pearson VUE test centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Cochin and Chandigarh. The fee is £83 per attempt.
Which OSCE centre is best for Indian nurses?
Ulster University in Derry has historically reported the highest pass rate (~54%). Following the closure of Northumbria in February 2026, Ulster slots fill within hours of release. Indian applicants should be ready to book the moment slots open. Oxford Brookes and Northampton are reliable alternatives.
Can my husband or wife work in the UK on my Health and Care Worker Visa?
Yes. Spouses on the Health and Care Worker dependant visa can work full-time in any sector — including non-healthcare roles. They are not restricted to your sponsor.
How much does the full NMC route from India cost?
Allow approximately £1,170 in NMC fees (eligibility £140, CBT £83, OSCE £794, registration £153) plus English test (£200–£400), translations and verifications (£100–£300), Standard Visitor Visa (~£127), travel and UK accommodation for OSCE (£800–£1,500), and the eventual Health and Care Worker Visa (£324). Total: around £3,000–£4,500 from start to NMC PIN, depending on whether your employer reimburses any costs.
Will I need to take CEFR B2 English again for my UK visa?
If you already passed OET Grade B or IELTS Academic 7.0 for the NMC, you exceed the visa-stage CEFR B2 requirement and do not need to retake. Adult dependants do need their own B2 evidence — see our CEFR B2 visa English guide.
